Located in Hanagawa-cho, Kitaibaraki City—an area close to the mountains and the sea where much of the natural landscape remains intact—this 120-year-old traditional Japanese house opened as an exclusive rental property in September 2019. Perched on a hilltop, it boasts a stately appearance, magnificent tiled roofing, and features rarely seen today, such as a raised entranceway, transom windows, and decorative shelves. If you walk about three minutes past the torii gate next to the entrance to “Marcelo,” you’ll reach Sawawachigi Shrine, which is associated with Minamoto no Yoriyoshi. The shrine is located within the grounds, nestled in a bamboo grove behind an old folk house. “Marcelo,” protected by this shrine and the forest, is filled with a sense of sacredness and a rich, vibrant atmosphere.

There is an irori in the Japanese-style room directly ahead as you enter the foyer. Although this space was originally designed as an irori, it was used as a sunken kotatsu for about 60 years. We have now restored it to its original irori form so that our guests can fully experience the atmosphere of a samurai residence. Spending time gathered around it is truly soothing.

Traces of the meticulous craftsmanship from the time of its construction in Meiji 30 can still be seen throughout the building. From the air circulation system and the ceilings made of single slabs of wood to the shelf posts crafted with exquisite artistry, the transom windows made of intricate wood and glass, and the nine glass windows, each featuring a different carved landscape, you will surely appreciate its value as an architectural heritage site.

Perched on a hill surrounded by nature, this spacious single-story home features 6LDK. Although it’s classified as a traditional Japanese house, it differs from typical homes—it’s a samurai-style residence with a total floor area of 264 square meters that looks like it could have come straight out of a period drama. Inside, the house retains its original, time-worn fixtures and transom windows, which are still carefully maintained and used to this day. The total lot area is 823 square meters. In the spacious private garden outside the house, you can enjoy barbecues; on clear nights, you can gaze at the beautiful starry sky; and if you’re a fan of shrines, you can visit the one located on the hill behind the property (a 1-minute walk away).

In 2011, all the roof tiles were replaced, and in 2012, the entrance foyer was expanded and the kitchen, bathroom, and toilet—along with other wet areas—underwent a major renovation. Parts of the kitchen, dining area, and hallway were refinished with solid cedar planks. In 2018, the entranceway and portions of the building’s exterior were renovated. The house combines the best of traditional Japanese architecture with modern conveniences, creating a space where everyone who gathers here can feel comfortable.

高台
田んぼの中に裏山を背負った形で周囲から5ｍほど高い場所に建設された作りはまるで集落を見渡す役割を担った屋敷のよう。駐車場から20ｍほど坂道を上ったところに“まるせろ”があります。目下には田んぼと集落、裏には神社と竹山、遠くには山々が望め、壮大な自然を存分に満喫できます。

目に入るものの殆どが自然。敷地823㎡の広大な庭、建屋から眺める木々・蝶々、そして遠くの山々。自然いっぱいの景色は心を豊かにし、忙しい日常から離れ、何か大切なものを思い出させてくれるよう。

入口の門にかぶさる松・裏山の竹・坂道途中にはゆずの木、そこから見える柿の木・庭にところどころ存在する榊、どれも生きていて、まるせろと共存しています。そんな植物の暖かさと力強さに囲まれています。

目の前の田んぼにはカエルやバッタ、6月頃には運がよければ蛍も見る事ができます。季節が来ると、蝶々やトンボが庭を彩ります。ウグイスやヒグラシなど、自然界が季節ごとに異なる音色を奏でてくれます。今では貴重な自然そのままに近い環境がそこにはあります。

建屋から望む山々は優雅で壮大。車で15分ほど離れた場所にある施設（マウントあかね）からは自然と人間が共存する町並みと、壮大な太平洋を望む事ができます。日の出を眺めるスポットとしても人気です。

車で20分ほど走ると海に出られます。落ち着いた天気が続くと、濃くて鮮やかな青色を放つ北茨城の海が望めます。夏は磯原海岸で海水浴を楽しんだり、オールシーズンで海産物を食せる大津港は気軽に海を楽しめるスポットです。

田園に囲まれた高台にある立地で周辺街灯も少ないので、晴天時には夜の星空も存分に楽しめます。また、6月下旬ごろになると、ホタルが飛び交う姿が見られる日もあります。

ここ、北茨城市は東日本大震災で被害を受けた地域でした。まるせろも被害も予想されましたが、祖父の一言がきっかけで、震災直前に瓦を全て修理していたお陰もあり、奇跡的に無事でした。そんな奇跡の文化財を堪能していただけたら嬉しいです。
元は私たちの祖父母や先祖が住居として使用しており、私の父親も生まれ育った家でしたが、近年はお盆や地域のお祭り時の帰省場所として使うのみでした。しかし2016年の冬、この家を継いだ私の父親から「これからは、この家を好きに使っていいぞ」と言われました。戸惑いと嬉しさを感じながら、はじめは会社の仲間や友人たちを招待して別荘として活用しました。バーベキューをしたり、夜中までお酒を飲みながら語り明かしたり、大切な人とより深く繋がる体験ができて、幸せで豊かな時間を過ごすことができました。
何よりも嬉しかったのは、そこに来てくれた皆が「楽しかった」「また来たい」と言ってくれたことでした。
『もっと多くの人に同じ体験をしてほしい』
そう思ったのが施設貸し出しのきっかけでした。
